Eddie Arning(1898-1993)’s plethora of colorful crayon and Craypas drawings are filled with as much story as his narrative of rising as an outsider artist. Raised in a strict Lutheran farming household in Texas, Arning releases his repressed childhood and troubled memories through creative means.

In 1964, Arning was introduced to art by a local teacher working in the hospital, who offered him wax crayons, paper, and coloring books. After his initial practices with coloring that shaped his visual sensibility, he was able to master more complex arrangements of figures, colors, and patterns, and soon began to create his own compositions. Arning’s early drawings are selected memories of his youth that suggest the reconstruction  of his difficult past. His work is in the collections of the Museum of Fine Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Milwaukee Art Museum, and the American Folk Art Museum, among others.
