방정아 작가는 한국 현대사회에 대한 비판적이고 풍자적인 작업을 주로 해왔으며 자신을 둘러싼 일상적이고 친숙한 동시대 풍경을 화폭에 그려내며 일상의 순간 작가에게 영감을 주는 장소나 그 이면에 존재하는 이야기를 전달하고, 사회의 인식과 문제를 작품 속에 그림의 서사로 담아낸다.

방정아 작가는 1990년-2000년대 후반까지는 한국 사회의 변화와 빠르고 다양한 변화 속 사람들이 느끼는 불안의 감정과 정서, 강박이나 우울 등을 표현하고, 한국의 정치 풍경, 분단과 자본주의의 다소 서글픈 풍자를 담았다. 2014년 4월 16일 세월호 참사 이후 그녀의 작업 방향은 크게 변화했다. 냉소적인 비판과 참여로써 사회의 변화를 기대하기 보다, 예술이 사회에서 할 수 있는 보다 깊은 이해와 정서적 소통에 더 치중하기로 하였다. 그 변화가 그림의 표현적 장치들을 중요하게 여기게 하여 그림의 회화적 표현의 역할들이 강화되었다.

부산 출신 작가로 부산에 살며 작업해온 그녀에게 바다는 막대한 재해가 될 수도 있는 두려움, 정화가 이뤄질 수도 있는 잠재성의 실체이기도 하다. 이 모든 것을 담고 있다고 말하는 작가의 작품에서 바다는 자주 그림의 배경으로 등장한다.

방정아 작가는 홍익대학교 미술대학을 졸업 후 부산을 기반으로 활동하고 있는 작가이다. 2021년 국립현대미술관 올해의 작가 상을 수상하며, 150여 차례 기획전에 참가하는 등 활발히 활동하고 있는 작가로 부산시립미술관(2019), 대안공간 풀(2008) 등에서 개인전을 가진 바 있으며, 국립현대미술관, 부산시립미술관 등에 작품이 소장되어 있다.
